Cassava is one of Africa’s most important food crops, providing food and livelihoods for millions of people. In Nigeria and other parts of Africa, attention often focuses on the starchy cassava root, but the plant’s leaves are also traditionally consumed in some communities after careful preparation.

Cassava leaves contain protein, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds. Their nutritional composition varies according to the cassava variety, maturity of the leaves and preparation method.

One potential benefit is their contribution to normal immune function. Cassava leaves can provide vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds. Vitamin C plays an important role in normal immune function, while antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress.

The leaves also contain dietary fibre, which supports normal digestion and healthy bowel movements. Including fibre-rich foods as part of a balanced diet can contribute to overall digestive health, particularly when accompanied by adequate fluid intake.

Cassava leaves contain nutrients including iron and folate, which are important for normal blood formation. However, their nutritional content can vary, and they should not be regarded as a treatment for anaemia. People with suspected or diagnosed anaemia should seek appropriate medical advice.

Research has also identified phytochemicals in cassava leaves with antioxidant activity in laboratory studies. However, further human research is needed to establish how these compounds affect health when cassava leaves are consumed as food.

Safety remains essential. Raw or inadequately processed cassava leaves can contain cyanogenic compounds that may release cyanide. Traditional methods such as thorough cooking and appropriate processing are therefore important for reducing these compounds. Cassava leaves should never be eaten raw or prepared casually.

When properly prepared, cassava leaves can be a valuable part of traditional diets, providing nutrients that complement vegetables, legumes, grains and other protein sources.

“Cassava leaves can provide protein, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds.”

“Safety remains essential” is equally important: good nutrition begins with proper preparation.

Across African communities, traditional foods continue to demonstrate their potential to support nutritious, locally available diets. With responsible preparation and continued research, cassava leaves can remain part of a food culture that connects nutrition, tradition and community wellbeing.
