Dave Bautista Begins Kratos Training for God of War

Dave Bautista is embracing one of his most physically demanding roles yet as he prepares to portray Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War.

The 57-year-old actor and former WWE star is three weeks into a renewed weight-training programme designed to rebuild the imposing physique required for the legendary Spartan warrior. Bautista recently shared a glimpse of his progress, making it clear that the transformation is still underway.

“3rd week in to weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin a bike! LFG!” Bautista wrote in an Instagram update.

The preparation reflects the physical commitment Bautista is bringing to a production that has already endured a major setback.

Bautista officially took over the role from Ryan Hurst in August after Hurst, who had been announced as Kratos in January, suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set. The injury required surgery and would have made a return within the production schedule impractical, prompting Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to recast the role.

Four episodes had reportedly been filmed before Hurst’s injury, meaning the production faces significant work as Bautista steps into the character and previously filmed material is revisited.

For Bautista, however, the challenge represents more than simply gaining muscle. Kratos is one of gaming’s most recognisable characters, carrying a story built around grief, fatherhood, redemption and the struggle to overcome a violent past.

His preparation also highlights the dedication required behind major productions. While audiences ultimately see the finished performance on screen, Bautista’s training is a reminder that bringing a beloved character to life demands discipline, sacrifice and resilience.

Sony’s PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash has also highlighted what Bautista brings beyond physical strength, describing his “extraordinary presence, depth, and humanity” as reasons for excitement around the casting.

With two more months of training ahead, Bautista’s journey is only beginning. If his determination continues, fans may soon see a Kratos shaped not only by strength, but by the passion and humanity that could make this new chapter of God of War truly memorable.
