In Adagom Refugee Settlement in Ogoja, Cross River State, Nigeria, cassava represents more than a source of food. For hardworking refugee families, it offers an opportunity to build sustainable livelihoods, improve household incomes, and create a brighter future for children.

Across the settlement, farmers cultivate cassava and process it into garri, but limited financial returns continue to restrict the economic benefits of their efforts. Now, the Greater Love Sustainable Initiative (GLOSI), a refugee-led organisation, is seeking partners and sponsors to establish a cassava-processing and bakery project that could unlock new opportunities for the community.

The initiative aims to transform locally grown cassava into high-quality flour for bread production, creating opportunities to increase the value of agricultural products and develop additional income streams.

“The ambition is not simply to build a bakery. It is to build a pathway towards economic independence.”

Turning Agricultural Potential into Sustainable Livelihoods

The proposed project requires cassava-processing machinery, flour-production facilities, bakery equipment, and a suitable production space. With the necessary investment, technical guidance, and business partnerships, the initiative could create employment opportunities, develop practical skills, and strengthen household incomes.

Beyond bread production, the project seeks to establish a sustainable enterprise capable of contributing to the organisation's wider humanitarian mission.

For GLOSI, economic empowerment and community development go hand in hand. The organisation currently supports up to 1,200 children in Adagom Refugee Settlement and hopes to expand its reach to approximately 5,000 children and potentially more.

Many refugee families face financial difficulties in meeting essential needs, including education, healthcare, food, and other necessities. A successful income-generating enterprise could help strengthen GLOSI's capacity to support children and vulnerable households.

Investing in Refugees, Empowering Communities

The project also highlights the potential of refugee-led solutions. Rather than viewing displaced people solely through the challenges they face, the initiative recognizes their agricultural knowledge, determination, skills, and ability to contribute to their communities.

By introducing cassava flour production and baking, the project could provide opportunities for training in food processing, baking, marketing, and business management.

However, achieving these outcomes will require careful planning, market research, food-safety measures, and sound financial management.

An Appeal for Partnership and Support

GLOSI is appealing to philanthropists, businesses, development partners, and people of goodwill to join hands with the Let's Make THE Difference (LMTD) Organisation in supporting the initiative.

Contributions could include financial assistance, equipment donations, technical expertise, business mentorship, and training.

“Above all, this is an opportunity to invest in the abilities of refugees themselves.”

Every partnership could help move the vision closer to reality, creating opportunities for families to earn sustainable incomes while strengthening support for children.

A Future Built on Hope

The proposed bakery offers a vision of what becomes possible when communities receive the tools to transform existing resources into economic opportunities.

Imagine cassava farmers earning more from their harvests, community members developing valuable skills, and a growing local enterprise helping support children's education and family wellbeing.

With sustained investment, effective partnerships, and community commitment, Adagom's cassava fields could become the foundation of a more secure and hopeful future.

By joining hands with GLOSI and LMTD, supporters can help transform cassava into opportunity, sustainable livelihoods, and renewed hope for refugee children and their families.
