At 41, Luka Modrić continues to leave the door open on retirement, insisting that his future will be guided not by age or outside expectations, but by his passion, ambition and ability to keep competing at the highest level.

Following Croatia’s recent international fixtures, the legendary midfielder made it clear that he has not decided when he will step away from football. “We’ll see. I still have the passion, ambition and strength,” Modrić said. “While I have that, I want to keep playing. I’ll listen to my body and make the decision with total calmness.”

Those words reflect the mindset that has defined one of football’s most remarkable careers. Rather than announcing a fixed retirement date, Modrić is choosing to live in the present, continuing to evaluate how he feels and what he can contribute.

His journey remains extraordinary. After 13 decorated seasons with Real Madrid, where he won six European Cups and the 2018 Ballon d’Or, Modrić moved to AC Milan in 2025. Milan extended his contract in July 2026, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2027.

His influence also extends beyond club football. Modrić remains available for Croatia, having represented the national team since 2006 and established himself as the country’s record appearance holder.

For younger players watching his career, his approach offers a powerful lesson: longevity is not simply about refusing to stop, but about continuing to find meaning in the work and remaining willing to adapt.

“While I’m here, I’m happy,” Modrić has said, reinforcing the importance he places on enjoying the game and contributing to his team.

For now, the Croatian maestro continues to write another chapter. Whether his final whistle is approaching or still some distance away, Modrić’s message is clear: as long as the passion remains, the journey continues. And for football fans around the world, there is still hope of witnessing more moments from one of the game’s most enduring midfield masters.
