For Mrs Hannah Egbelle Joseph John, entrepreneurship is about more than running a business. It is a journey of independence, learning, empowerment and creating opportunities for others.
Originally from Benue State, Nigeria and now residing in Kaduna, Mrs Hannah Joseph John is the founder of Issanah Skillsphere Kitchen, an eatery that provides Nigerian dishes, snacks, small chops and drinks while also offering training in catering, baking and cake decoration.
Mrs Hannah Joseph John began her entrepreneurial journey around September 2015, driven by a desire to become independent and demonstrate to her daughters that women can build meaningful lives and careers without depending on others.
“I was motivated by lack to become independent and also show my girls that they don't need to depend on anyone especially men before they achieve anything in life,” she said.
The early years were challenging. Limited funds made the journey difficult. Yet Mrs Hannah Joseph John chooses to view those experiences as part of her growth rather than simply as hardship.
“I will not say it was a trying time for me but rather a finding and growing time for me,” she explained.
Today, Issanah Skillsphere Kitchen combines food with skills development and a message of hope, particularly for women. Mrs Hannah Joseph John says the business seeks to encourage women to recognize their ability to create, achieve and become self-reliant.
Her greatest reward is not measured only by business performance. Seeing customers enjoy their meals and watching her daughters develop confidence to carry on the business represent important milestones.
“My biggest achievement so far is to see the smiles on the face of my customers after they take the first spoon,” she said.
She also believes Africa offers significant opportunities for women entrepreneurs, provided they are given the space to demonstrate their abilities.
Looking ahead, Mrs Hannah Joseph John has a 10-year goal of transforming the business into a source of generational wealth. Her five-year vision is to move beyond the business’s early growth stage and begin building greater stability.
Her message to aspiring women entrepreneurs is simple:
Fear should not prevent action. With faith, determination, hard work and a willingness to learn from those ahead, she believes young women can turn their ideas into reality.
Her ultimate vision is to build “a lasting African company that creates quality food, valuable knowledge, productive people and generational wealth”, a legacy designed to outlive her and inspire others to believe in what they can become.
For Mrs Hannah Joseph John, the journey is still unfolding, but every meal served, skill shared and woman encouraged represents another step toward that hopeful future.
