Ahead of the Global NGO Stakeholders Summit 2026 in Nairobi, I spoke with Akso Kaposho Mapenzi, a refugee leader from Kalobeyei Settlement whose work is shaping conversations around inclusive development and economic opportunity.

Speaking before his departure, Akso shared his expectations for the summit and the responsibility he carries representing his community.

“It is important that policies connect with what refugees experience daily.”

Akso will attend as a reporter and researcher with World Business Network (WBN) News, with a clear mission: to listen, to learn, and to amplify the voices of others. His role at the summit is not just to report, but to engage directly with change makers, capturing their stories, sharing their ideas, and helping bring global attention to impactful work happening across sectors.

“It’s also an opportunity to network, build meaningful relationships, and create collaborations that can lead to real impact beyond the summit.”

His participation is supported by Let’s Make The Difference (LMTD), an organization committed to elevating grassroots voices in global decision-making spaces.

Through his work with the Kalobeyei Initiative for Better Life, Akso continues to demonstrate the power of community-led solutions. Programs focused on digital inclusion and smart agriculture have already equipped over 700 young people with skills, income opportunities, and improved food security.

Akso also highlighted key barriers that need urgent attention.

“Supporting refugee youth to work remotely can lead to long-term economic independence,”

he noted, pointing to the need for better access to work permits and fewer movement restrictions.

As global stakeholders prepare to gather in Nairobi, the summit presents more than just conversations, it offers a space for connection, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas that can shape the future of communities worldwide.

Akso’s presence reflects a growing shift in development. One that recognizes refugees not just as beneficiaries, but as contributors to sustainable economic growth. His journey to the summit is also an open invitation to others: to be part of a global movement where voices are heard, partnerships are formed, and solutions are built together.
