FIFA has officially abandoned its controversial proposal to sell private investment stakes in future FIFA World Cup tournaments after widespread criticism from football fans, national associations, and governing bodies across the globe.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed the decision in a statement released on Friday, saying the organization had listened to the concerns raised by stakeholders and concluded that moving forward with the proposal would not serve football's best interests.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” Infantino said.

“Our purpose has always been - and will always be - to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed.”

The proposal, first announced earlier in the week, would have seen FIFA establish a separate subsidiary with private equity investment to oversee the commercial and operational rights of future World Cup tournaments. FIFA argued that the additional funding would ultimately be reinvested into football development around the world.

However, the plan quickly attracted strong opposition from football stakeholders. Critics expressed concerns that allowing private investors to gain influence over the commercial future of the sport's biggest tournament could threaten football's traditions, governance, and independence. UEFA was among the organizations to publicly voice its objections, warning that the “soul and governance” of the game could be at risk.

Faced with mounting criticism, FIFA chose to withdraw the proposal and instead focus on rebuilding trust and unity across the global football community.

Infantino emphasized that FIFA's attention will now shift toward constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.

“Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,”

he said.

The decision marks a significant moment for world football, highlighting the importance of collaboration and transparency in shaping the sport's future. As FIFA seeks to restore unity, the renewed commitment to growing football in developing nations offers hope that the game will continue to thrive while preserving the values that have made the World Cup a truly global celebration.
