Foreign nationals planning an extended stay in Kenya are being reminded of the importance of registering for a Foreign Nationals Certificate, commonly known as an Alien ID, as part of the country's efforts to maintain an efficient and secure immigration system.
Under Kenyan immigration regulations, all foreign nationals aged 18 and above who intend to remain in the country for more than 90 days must register for the certificate through the Directorate of Immigration Services. The document serves as official proof of legal registration and is an essential requirement for many foreign residents, including work permit holders, students, dependents, permanent residents, and other eligible long-term visitors.
Applications are submitted through the Kenya eFNS Portal, where applicants begin the process online before completing identity verification, approval, and fingerprint capture in person. Authorities advise applicants to prepare all required supporting documents in advance, as incomplete applications will not be processed.
The registration fee is KSh 5,000 per year and is non-refundable. Foreign nationals who fail to register when required may face a KSh 10,000 penalty in addition to other legal consequences under Kenya's immigration laws.
The validity of the certificate varies according to an individual's immigration status. Initial certificates are valid for up to two years and may be renewed for additional two-year periods, while permanent residents may receive certificates valid for up to three years.
Kenyan law also provides exemptions for specific groups, including registered refugees under the Refugees Act, 2021, members of the armed forces, qualifying public officers and their families, individuals exempted under Section 34(3) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, and other persons specifically exempted by law.
The Directorate also reminds applicants that providing false information is a criminal offence and that foreign nationals must obtain the appropriate permit or pass before engaging in employment.
