A high salary can create the appearance of financial success, but income and wealth are not the same thing. Income is the money a person earns over a period, while net worth reflects what that person owns after subtracting what they owe.
The Federal Reserve defines household net worth as the difference between total assets and liabilities. Assets can include savings, investments, property and other valuable possessions, while liabilities include debts and other financial obligations.
This distinction matters because a person can earn a substantial income and still have limited wealth if most of that money is consumed by living expenses, debt payments and other obligations. On the other hand, someone with a more modest income may steadily build net worth by saving, investing and acquiring assets while managing debt responsibly.
The Federal Reserve has also noted that income and net worth are different measures: income is a flow over a period, while net worth is a measure of accumulated financial position at a particular point in time.
Building wealth, therefore, is not simply about earning more. It is also about what happens to the money after it is earned. Creating a budget, maintaining an emergency reserve, reducing expensive debt, saving consistently and investing according to personal circumstances can help turn income into longer-term financial resources. Investor.gov recommends tracking income and expenses while including savings and investments as part of a financial plan.
The goal is not to judge people by a number. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau emphasizes that financial well-being also involves security, control over day-to-day finances, the ability to absorb financial shocks and freedom to pursue personal goals.
“Income gives you resources today; wealth gives you greater financial choices for tomorrow.”
“The journey from earning money to building wealth begins with understanding where your money goes.”
For workers, entrepreneurs and families striving for a stronger future, every informed financial decision can become part of a bigger story. Wealth is not built overnight. With patience, discipline and purposeful choices, income can become a foundation for greater security, opportunity and hope.
