In Nigeria’s growing sports development space, Coach Jonathan David, widely known as Coach Thaj, is building more than volleyball players. Through his work as a volleyball coach, sports developer, and founder of Destiny Hands Volleyball Academy, he is helping young people discover purpose, discipline, and hope for a better future.
In this interview, Coach Thaj shares the story behind his journey, the challenges he faced, and his vision for youth empowerment through sports.
“I was inspired by the desire to help young people, especially children from less privileged communities, use sports to build a better future and stay away from social vices,”
he said.
That passion became the foundation of Destiny Hands Volleyball Academy, an initiative focused on grassroots sports development and equal opportunities for talented young athletes regardless of their background.
Like many community-driven projects, the journey was not easy. Coach Thaj revealed that one of the biggest obstacles was the lack of funding and equipment. However, he remained committed to the vision.
“I overcame it through passion, consistency, personal sacrifice, and support from people who believe in the vision,”
he explained.
Over time, the academy has grown from a small local team into a respected platform producing players for state and national teams. The academy has also gained recognition in Nigeria volleyball through medals and competitive achievements.
According to Coach Thaj, what makes the organization unique is its strong emphasis on discipline, grassroots development, and equal opportunity.
Beyond sports success, the academy is creating social impact by helping young people build confidence, teamwork, leadership, and direction in life.
“Many players now have better direction in life because of volleyball,”
he said.
Coach Thaj also highlighted the importance of technology and social media in modern sports development. He noted that online platforms help promote players, showcase training activities, connect with supporters, and create awareness for their programs.
Reflecting on his experience, he said patience, consistency, sacrifice, and good leadership are essential for anyone building a successful venture.
His advice to young entrepreneurs is simple: stay focused, keep learning, start with available resources, and never give up.
