Africa’s growing influence in global economic and innovation conversations took centre stage as the Africa Forward Summit 2026 officially opened in Nairobi on 11 May. The high-level gathering brought together more than 30 African heads of state, global investors, development institutions, and business leaders for two days of dialogue focused on the continent’s future.

Co-hosted by William Ruto and Emmanuel Macron, the summit marked a historic moment as the long-running Africa-France partnership forum was held for the first time in an English-speaking African nation. Discussions centred on innovation, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, infrastructure, financial reform, and expanding economic cooperation between African nations and international partners.

Among the African leaders in attendance were Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Paul Kagame, Abiy Ahmed, John Dramani Mahama, and Mamady Doumbouya, alongside representatives from global financial institutions and private sector organizations.

A major focus of the summit was the reform of global financing systems and improving Africa’s access to affordable capital. African leaders stressed that despite the continent’s vast economic potential, many countries still face high borrowing costs and limited investment confidence.

President Ruto noted that Africa’s greatest challenge is

“not the absence of opportunity but the perception of risk,”

a message that resonated strongly throughout the summit discussions. Meanwhile, President Macron announced investment commitments worth €23 billion aimed at renewable energy, agriculture, digital infrastructure, and artificial intelligence projects across Africa.

For Kenya, the summit further strengthened Nairobi’s growing reputation as a continental hub for diplomacy, technology, and global business engagement.

More importantly, the gathering reflected a broader African vision built on partnership, innovation, and shared prosperity rather than dependence on aid.

As the summit concludes, many hope the conversations and commitments made in Nairobi will translate into long-term investments, stronger regional cooperation, and new opportunities capable of improving millions of lives across Africa.
