Tabitha Muthoni Maina’s journey into leadership was never defined by ambition or titles. Instead, it was shaped by resilience, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. Today, through her work in Economic Inclusion and Livelihood Assistance (Placement) with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Kakuma, Kenya, she continues to help refugees rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Tabitha’s story began with profound personal loss. At just four years old, she lost her mother, leaving her to be raised first by her grandmother and later by her stepmother while her father pursued his education. Those early challenges instilled resilience, responsibility, and a deep understanding of hardship. Rather than allowing suffering to define her, she transformed it into compassion for others facing difficult circumstances.

Her selflessness became even more evident as a young adult. She made the difficult decision to leave college during her second year so her siblings could continue their education. At only twenty, she worked tirelessly through employment and small businesses to support her family, proving that compassion is demonstrated through sacrifice and action.

A turning point came when she moved to Lokichoggio to assist her aunt with a grocery business. There, she encountered refugees fleeing conflict in South Sudan. What began as a role as a Store and Administrative Assistant evolved into a lifelong commitment to humanitarian service. Through emergency response, development work, and livelihood support, Tabitha discovered that meaningful service is about restoring dignity, nurturing hope, and empowering people to believe in their own potential.

One experience remains especially significant. She supported a survivor of war and gender-based violence through recovery, offering consistent encouragement, prayer, companionship, and practical support. Today, that woman has rebuilt her life as an entrepreneur, reunited her children with education, and become a source of inspiration for others.

Tabitha’s life reflects a powerful truth: leadership grows through service. Her work demonstrates that real influence comes from walking alongside people, creating opportunities, and helping others discover their own strength. As she continues serving communities in Kakuma, her journey stands as a reminder that lives transformed through compassion can, in turn, transform the world with hope.
