Manchester United’s return to the UEFA Champions League has been given a dramatic edge after the 2026/27 league-phase draw paired the Red Devils with some of Europe’s biggest clubs, alongside several intriguing challenges.

United will begin their European campaign with a home meeting against Bayern Munich, setting up an immediate heavyweight contest at Old Trafford. They will then travel to face Atlético Madrid before welcoming Roma to Manchester.

The remaining fixtures will see United travel to Sporting CP, host RB Leipzig, visit Villarreal, welcome Azerbaijan’s Sabah FC and finish the league phase away against Como. UEFA has confirmed that each club will play eight league-phase matches, four at home and four away.

The fixture list offers United a mixture of glamour, history and opportunity. Bayern brings the prestige of one of European football’s most successful clubs, while Atlético promises another demanding test against a side renowned for its competitive character. Roma, Sporting and Leipzig add further Champions League pedigree, while Villarreal, Sabah and Como provide different challenges.

For United, the significance goes beyond the names on the fixture list. After being absent from the competition for three years, their return represents another important step in rebuilding their place among Europe’s elite. ESPN described the campaign as United’s return to the competition for the first time in three years, with Michael Carrick’s side facing Bayern at home and Atlético away.

The league phase also creates opportunities for supporters to experience some of football’s biggest nights again. Old Trafford will welcome Bayern, Roma, Leipzig and Sabah, giving fans four opportunities to see Champions League football under the lights.

“Back in Europe’s top competition” is more than a headline for United supporters; it reflects the scale of the journey ahead.

The challenge will be significant, but so is the opportunity.
