Nigerian innovator Khalifa Aminu is drawing attention for developing AI-powered smart glasses designed to help blind and visually impaired people navigate their surroundings with greater independence.
Unlike conventional smart glasses, Aminu’s invention combines artificial intelligence, sensors and GPS technology to assist users in detecting objects and obstacles in their path while also providing location awareness. The concept is aimed at reducing dependence on a walking stick or another person for everyday movement.
A key feature of the project is its GPS tracking capability. According to Aminu, if a user becomes lost, the system can help determine their location and send that information to the phone of a caregiver through WhatsApp or email. This could provide an additional layer of reassurance for families and caregivers supporting visually impaired people.
The inventor has also announced plans to take the project further by integrating AI with voice technology. The next stage is intended to allow the glasses to communicate with the user and provide information that can help them understand their surroundings.
Aminu described the project as an effort to demonstrate what Nigerian innovators can build, calling attention to the potential of local technology and creativity to address real-life challenges.
