Beyond Arrests: Kaduna’s Drug Recovery Fight

Kaduna’s fight against drug abuse must go beyond arrests, seizures and prosecution. While disrupting the supply of illicit substances remains essential, a lasting response must also address the people already struggling with drug dependence and give them a genuine opportunity to recover, rebuild their lives and return to their communities.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recognizes this wider responsibility through its Directorate of Drug Demand Reduction, which focuses on prevention, counselling, treatment, rehabilitation, psychosocial interventions and social reintegration. The agency says its programmes include educating young people about the risks of drug use while providing support for people struggling with addiction.

This approach is particularly important for communities in Kaduna, where families, schools, community leaders and health professionals all have roles to play. Nigeria’s National Drug Control Master Plan describes substance-use dependence as a complex health problem influenced by biological, psychological and social factors. It also stresses that treatment should be accessible, affordable and delivered as a continuum of care rather than treated as a one-time intervention.

The scale of the challenge is significant. In July 2026, the NDLEA reported that, over an 18-month period, it had provided counselling, treatment and rehabilitation to 13,508 drug users through 31 rehabilitation centres nationwide. The figure is national, not Kaduna-specific, but it highlights the growing importance of treatment within Nigeria’s drug-control strategy.

The NDLEA has also emphasized the human side of recovery. In November 2025, Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa described treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration as efforts that must balance enforcement, while noting that the agency’s centres provide medical treatment, counselling and reintegration support.

These efforts remind us that recovery deserves compassion, professional care and sustained community support. People battling drug dependence should have pathways to seek help and rebuild without being permanently defined by their past.

For Kaduna, the strongest response will be one that combines prevention, enforcement, treatment and reintegration. Every person who receives appropriate support represents more than a statistic; it is a family given another chance and a community strengthened.

The ultimate measure of success should not only be how many drugs are seized or arrests made, but how many lives are helped back toward health, dignity and purpose. With sustained commitment, Kaduna can become a place where prevention is stronger, treatment is accessible and recovery is possible.
