Protecting Kaduna’s Youth from Drug Abuse

Drug abuse prevention is becoming an increasingly important part of protecting young people and strengthening communities in Kaduna State. For families, schools and community organisations, the challenge goes beyond simply telling young people to avoid drugs. It is about creating safe environments, providing accurate information and ensuring that young people have the confidence and support to make healthy choices.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) places education, awareness, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation among its approaches to reducing drug demand. Its prevention activities reach schools, communities, religious institutions and other settings where young people and vulnerable groups can be engaged.

This approach highlights why prevention must begin early. Parents can create spaces where children feel comfortable discussing peer pressure, substance use and other challenges. Teachers can provide reliable information and identify concerns early, while community, religious and traditional leaders can reinforce positive values and encourage young people to seek help when they need it.

The responsibility is therefore shared. No single institution can protect Kaduna’s young people alone.

The NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative continues to use sensitisation and community outreach as part of its demand-reduction efforts. In July 2026, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, called on traditional institutions, parents and community leaders to work with the agency in tackling substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Speaking in Kaduna on July 11, 2026, Marwa also stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable young people from conditions that can contribute to drug abuse and exploitation.

“By protecting the girl-child, we protect the family, and by protecting the family, we secure the nation,” Marwa said.

He also emphasised the need to protect, educate and empower young people, calling for stronger partnerships with traditional institutions.

For Kaduna, prevention is ultimately an investment in human potential. Every child equipped with knowledge, guidance and support represents a future that can be protected. With families, schools, communities and institutions working together, Kaduna can give more young people the opportunity to grow, dream and build healthier lives.
