Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced a significant offshore light crude oil discovery in Nigeria, marking its first major exploration success since taking over operatorship of strategic oil assets previously managed by Shell.
The discovery was made at the JK-004 exploration well in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, located in Nigeria's shallow offshore region. According to the company, the well encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing formations across seven reservoirs, indicating promising commercial potential.
Initial analysis of wireline logs and fluid samples confirmed the presence of high-quality light crude oil, a premium grade that is easier to refine and typically commands higher value in international markets. The discovery represents an encouraging milestone for Nigeria's upstream petroleum sector as the country continues efforts to boost production and attract fresh investment.
Renaissance Chief Executive Officer Tony Attah described the achievement as "a landmark achievement for the company and Nigeria's energy industry." He added that the success reflects Renaissance's technical capability and the strong collaboration with its partners, including NNPC Limited, TotalEnergies, Agip Energy and Natural Resources, and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Industry experts believe the discovery could strengthen Nigeria's drive to increase crude oil production, expand its proven reserves, and reinforce investor confidence in the nation's oil and gas industry. It also showcases the growing expertise of indigenous energy companies in leading major exploration and production projects.
The company is expected to carry out further appraisal drilling and technical studies to determine the full extent of the reserves and evaluate the field's commercial viability before development begins.
If the project progresses successfully, the new discovery could contribute significantly to Nigeria's long-term energy security, increase export earnings, create new economic opportunities, and support the country's position as one of Africa's leading oil producers.
As Renaissance advances to the next phase of exploration, the discovery offers renewed optimism that innovation, collaboration, and local expertise will continue to unlock Nigeria's vast energy potential for the benefit of future generations.
