As leaders, advocates, and changemakers gather in Nairobi for the Global NGO Summit, one supporter’s influence is reaching far beyond the borders of the United States. Through her steadfast belief in refugee leadership, Wendy Huffman has sponsored refugee delegates to attend the summit, ensuring that voices often left out of global conversations have an opportunity to be heard.
For Wendy, the decision to support refugee leaders has never been about charity. Instead, it is rooted in a firm belief that leadership, talent, and vision exist in every community when given the chance to flourish.
Over the past two years, she has met regularly with refugee leaders, listening to their stories, ideas, challenges, and aspirations. Those conversations revealed remarkable resilience and an unwavering commitment to creating positive change despite difficult circumstances.
One particular moment profoundly reshaped her perspective.
“I remember quite clearly,” she recalls.
“After almost two years of meeting weekly, one person asked if we could delay the meeting a few hours because they had to go wait in line for water.”
The experience left a lasting impression.
“I was so humbled that I was so unaware of the struggles faced in their lives. I can say I knew some things, but in that moment, everything shifted for me.”
Rather than focusing solely on hardship, Wendy saw determined leaders who continued to serve their communities while facing daily challenges. That realization strengthened her commitment to investing in their future and creating opportunities for them to engage with global decision-makers.
Her sponsorship has enabled refugee leaders to participate in the Global NGO Summit, where they can exchange ideas, build partnerships, and contribute practical solutions to international development challenges.
Looking ahead, Wendy remains deeply confident in those she supports.
“It is not difficult to imagine that. I know it will happen. I hope they will have grace for all the disappointments, and I want them to step confidently in the direction of their dreams with the confidence and determination they saw in me, against all odds. I know they will never give up.”
Her words reflect a belief that transcends borders that investing in people is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change. As the Global NGO Summit continues in Nairobi, Wendy Huffman’s story stands as a reminder that trust can unlock potential, and that believing in emerging leaders today can help shape a more hopeful and inclusive tomorrow.
“I was so humbled that I was so unaware of the struggles faced in their lives.”
