In refugee communities where daily challenges often include unemployment, overcrowding, gender-based violence, and family separation, Ali Osman is helping to create a different future. As the founder of Community Development and Opportunities Inspiration (CDOI), he is championing refugee-led solutions that empower people to rebuild their lives with dignity, resilience, and hope.

CDOI was established with a clear vision: to move communities beyond aid dependency and toward sustainable, community-driven development. Recognizing that lasting change must come from within the communities themselves, the organization focuses on creating opportunities that strengthen economic independence, social cohesion, and long-term resilience for both refugees and host populations.

Throughout his journey, Osman has worked to address some of the most pressing challenges facing refugee communities. From severe overcrowding at water points and widespread youth unemployment to language barriers and family separation, these issues continue to impact thousands of lives. Yet, rather than viewing these challenges as barriers, CDOI has transformed them into opportunities for innovation and community action.

Today, the organization operates 11 integrated initiatives covering critical areas such as WASH services, youth employment, protection programs, family reunification, and economic cooperative branding. These initiatives are designed not only to respond to immediate humanitarian needs but also to create sustainable pathways toward self-reliance and prosperity.

A defining feature of CDOI’s work is its commitment to strengthening relationships between refugees and host communities. Through cross-community peace homestays, inclusive economic cooperatives, and interpreter training programs that bridge local dialects, the organization continues to promote understanding, unity, and peaceful coexistence.

Osman also places strong emphasis on youth leadership, encouraging young people to participate in digital microwork enterprises, reconciliation forums, and community-building initiatives that drive positive social change.

Under his leadership, CDOI has reached more than 1,500 beneficiaries, reduced water waiting times by 80 percent, and achieved a 70 percent community-led family dispute resolution rate. These achievements highlight the organization’s practical impact and the trust it has earned among the people it serves.

Looking ahead, Osman envisions expanding CDOI’s model beyond Kakuma to other refugee settings, including Dadaab and urban refugee communities. His long-term goal is to establish sustainable refugee self-reliance models that align with national humanitarian and development frameworks.

For aspiring community leaders, his message is simple: build genuine grassroots trust, develop sustainable solutions, and align initiatives with broader development goals.

As refugee communities continue to seek lasting solutions to complex challenges, Ali Osman and CDOI offer a powerful example of what is possible when local leadership, innovation, and community ownership come together. Their work is helping to create stronger, more resilient communities and proving that refugee-led initiatives can deliver meaningful and lasting change for generations to come.
